Question
In the ancient Roman galley slave ships, what was the title of the drum beater who set the pace for the rowers?

Thanks.

Answer
Hello,

In the ancient Roman slave galleys the one who set the  rhythm  for the rowers was called PAUSARIUS (nominative case, 2nd.declension).

Such a PAUSARIUS, i.e. the rowing-master of the oarsmen, used a drum or a hammer to set the rowing pace or to give the rowers the signal when to stop.

Best regards,
Maria
