Ancient/Classical History - Ancient Chinese Inventions

Expert: - 4/21/2005

Question
Hi, my name is Alexia Tomlinson. I am in seventh grade and am currently doing a project on Ancient Chinese Inventions. I have found different orders in which the compass was invented. I was wondering if you could help me. IF my question takes up too much of your time, don't bother answering it. Thanks in advance.

Answer
Hi Alexia,
First, I think it's important that you understand the difference between a "compass" and a "set of compassess".
Compass - a device used to find direction using the magnetic field of the earth.
Set of Compasses - a hinged instrument used to measure or circumscribe on a drawing or map.
I assume you are referring to the "compass".
The ancient Egyptians developed a system of measuring precisely which way was directly north. The positioning of the Great Pyramid proves this. Therefore, I think the answer to your question is not what you'd hoped. However, I think you are referring to the mechanical device used to find north.
It is believed that the magnetic compass was invented by the Chinese. See here:

I hope this helps you.
