Ancient/Classical History - Ancient Egyptian Women

Expert: Rudy de Swart - 5/3/2004

Question
Hi,
My name is Stephanie and i am in 7th grade at Springfield Middle School. I am doing a research project in my English class. I wanted to know if you knew anything about Ancient Egyptian women. If you know anything I would really appreciate your telling me.
                     Thanks Again,
                            Stephanie

Answer
The ancient Egyptians regarded family as something very important so the women were treated very well.
Although the man was the head of the household, women were regarded as totally equal to men. They could own property, borrow money, sign contracts, get a divorce, appear in court as a witness, etc.
Women could also become Pharaoh, but only in very special circumstances. Only one woman, Hatshepsut, became Pharaoh.

I hope this information is helpful. If you have more questions, don't hesitate to ask.
