Question
hi,
I have recently finished a degree in ancient history and archaeology during which i lightly touched the subject of Hannibal and Carthage.I was made aware that the political processes of the Carthaginians are little known and would like to investige further.
Do you know which ancient texts (in preference to modern works) from which our current thinking has evolved as i would like to investigate whether I can hypothesise some conclusions of my own.
I thank you in advance of your answer.

Answer
Hello Simon,

As you said, primary or even secondary sources dealing with Carthaginian politics are non existent, as far as I or any other historian knows.  The same happenstance occurs with ancient texts.

All that I can suggest is the following:

ARTICLES ON ANCIENT HISTORY – CARTHAGE

http://www.livius.org/carthage.html

Carthage: Uncovering the Mysteries and Splendors of Ancient Tunisia  by Soren, David, and Slim, Hedi, and Ben Khader, Aicha Ben Abed - Based on dramatic new archaeological findings.

Hannibal A History of the Art of War Among the Carthagonians and Romans Down to the Battle of Pydna 168 BC   by Theodore Ayrault Dodge

Carthage: A History:  Serge Lancel  - Translated by Antonia Nevill !

Good luck on your search.   Hope my suggestions are of some help.

Regards,

Iru

Expertise

Along with teaching classical Literature for over thirty-eight years, I have also taught history of the Greco-Roman cultures. History and Mythology are, in my opinion, inseparable; it is necessary to have a background in both to have a clear understanding of both ends of the spectrum, the myth and the fact.

Experience

Thirty-eight years of teaching.
