Ancient Languages/Can someone please help me translate Respect and Loyalty into Latin?
Expert: Maria - 2/19/2009
QuestionHello Maria,
Please could you help me with my translation of those two words? I've just come through some serious trials and I am researching them.
For loyalty I was thinking Fidelitas.
For respect I was thinking Respectum. I have seen many forms such as veneratio but my understanding is this also means reverence which isn't really the form I am looking for. Also reverentia but that is more fear or awe as I understand it.
The meaning I would like behind the word respect, is something more like to hold in esteem or maybe honor. As in I respect his belief system, or I respect your judgement.
For loyalty I simply would like the right latin word to express loyalty to my morals, friends, and family.
AnswerHello,
the phrase “Respect and loyalty”, just in the sense you have explained, translates as follows:
“Respectus ac fidelitas”
As for “respectum”, please note that this is the accusative case (direct object) of the noun RESPECTUS ( belonging to the 4th.declension), while in your phrase you need the nominative RESPECTUS (subject).
Best regards,
Maria

Note that:
-Respect = RESPECTUS (nominative case, 4th.declension)
-And= AC (or ET, if you prefer this conjunction)
-Loyalty= FIDELITAS (nominative, 3rd.declension)
