Ancient Languages/Grave marker
Expert: Maria - 12/10/2005
QuestionHi N. Maria
I recently traveled to Germany with some friends from Italy and found a grave marker that I believe is written in Latin. I have tried translating it myself, but I am unsure that I have translated it correctly. I would greatly appreciate your input. The grave marker was fairly worn with age and some parts of it are hard to read.
I am also assuming it is a grave marker :)
Here it is:
memoria Ernesti Gernershanse
Gransoviensium Presuus
cui Magdeburgun
d:vii apr Amdclxviiiv
hamburgum fortunan
maria experientiam
urbes celebriores
ipsa que roma
prudentia
lichterfelda et grase
honores concilearuum
quibus
cum ultra xxx anos
praefiosset
placide obiit
d: ve decan DCCXXXII
cuius anima
reqviescat in pace
Thanks for your time
AnswerHello,
First of all here is the correct Latin text of this grave marker:
"Memoria
Ernesti Germershausen, Gransoviensium praesulis,
Cui Magdeburgum vitam, Hamburgum fortunam,
Maria Germanicum, Atlanticum, Gaditanum, Ligusticum,
Tyrrhenum experientiam,
Urbes Olysippum, Gades, Malaga, Alicante, Genua,
Livorno, Pisa, Florentia et ipsa
Roma prudentiam,
Lichterfelda et Gransoviense territorium
Honores conciliaverunt.
Quibus cum ultra XXX annos et quod excurrit praefuisset,
Placide obiit die VI Dec Anni MDCCXXXII.
Cujus anima requiescat in pace".
As for its translation, here it is:
"In memory of Ernst Germershausen, superintendent of Gransee,
Born in Magdeburg, he made a fortune in Hamburg,
He gained experience by sailing the North Sea, the Atlantic Ocean close to Spain, the Ligurian sea,
and the Tyrrhenian Sea,
He acquired wisdom while living in Lisbon, Cadiz, Malaga, Alicante, Genoa,
Livorno, Pisa, Florence and even Rome,
He received many honours from the district of Lichterfelde and Gransee,
Where he had authority and exercised his power for more than 30 years,
And died a good death on December 6, 1732.
May he rest in peace".
Hope this helps.
Best regards,
Maria
