Question
sic transit gloria mundi

ad majorem Dei gloriam

Hello Maria,

Please translate the phrases to English. I found these latin phrases in my old notes in high school

Thank you very much,

hobo

Answer
Hello,

Here’s the translation of the phrases you mention:

-“Thus  passes the glory of the world “  or  “So the glory of the world passes away”.
["Sic transit gloria mundi" which is a warning used at the installations of the popes to remind the Pope that, despite the grandeur of the ceremony, he is a mortal man].

-“For the greater glory of God”.
["Ad maiorem Dei gloriam" which is the motto of the Society of Jesus, commonly referred to as the Jesuits].

Best regards,
Maria
