My question is what where the 7 final words of jesus christ in his tounge? If you can helf this would be greatly appreciated thank you
AnswerHello,
As you say, I'm an expert in ancient Greek which however has nothing to do with Aramaic, i.e. the mother tongue of Jesus Christ.
Therefore, I can tell you the last words pronounced by Jesus as we read them in either the Greek text of the Gospels( Luke, Mark, John, Matthew) or the Latin text, though in Mark and Matthew there are also four words in Aramaic, i.e. "Heli, heli, lama sabachthani?".
So, here are the last words of Jesus Christ, according to the four Gospels.
Matthew 17:46
GREEK: Elôi elôi lema sabachthanei; tout' estin Thee mou thee mou, hina ti me enkatelipes;
LATIN: Heli Heli lema sabacthani hoc est Deus meus, Deus meus, quid dereliquisti me?
ENGLISH: "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
Mark 15:34
GREEK: “Elôi elôi lama sabachthanei;”
LATIN: "Heli, heli, lama sabachthani?"
ENGLISH: "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
Luke 23:46
GREEK:” Pater, eis cheiras sou paratithemai to pneuma mou”
LATIN : » Pater in manus tuas commendo spiritum meum «
ENGLISH : « Father, into your hands I commit my spirit!"
John 19:30
GREEK:” Tetelestai”
LATIN: “ Consummatum est!”
ENGLISH :"It is finished.”
As you can see, these four versions are different, according to the different Christ's disciple.
Hope this can be helpful to you.
Best regards,
Maria
