Anesthesiology/dental surgery

Question
I am a 29 year old female and I will be having dental surgery very soon.  I will be given nitrous oxide first and then intravenous anesthesia.  I have never been put to sleep before and I am terribly scared.  I have never had any major illnesses before and have been told not to worry but I can't help it.  Could you give me some info to help calm my fears?

Answer
As long as your dentist is properly trained in the use of anesthesia, there is nothing to worry about. The risks of major anesthetic related complications is less than 1:1,000,000 so if you are otherwise healthy, you would be more likely to be struck by lightning twice in the same day than to have an anesthetic complication.
