Question
I am writing a work of fiction and need my villain to be able to render someone unconscious quickly. I had used Chloroform on a pad for this. (old films to thank for that) Having done some research I think that it wouldn't work quickly enough.
What could be safely used to bring about unconsciousness quickly and be available (if maybe dishonestly) to a kidnapper?

If you want to use the inhalation technique then stick to chloroform as this is what readers are used to - even if it is a load of baloney!.
There is no agent that acts quickly as you describe even for us anaesthetists it takes a bit more time and the patient has to cooperate and take a big breath of the agent.
Might be better to spike their drink (date rape drugs are well known) or give them a quick IM injection straight through their clothing of an agent like ketamine - that would work well. They would struggle and could scream for a few minutes and then be unconscious for 10-15 minutes depending on dose used.
Hope this helps
