Anesthesiology/Nerve Damage

Question
I had an epidural when I gave birth to my first child.  After a forcep delivery, I was diagnosed with bilateral femoral nerve damage. For the most part I have recovered with only a little numbness still in my right leg.

I am pregnant again and wondering if it was safe to have an eipdural with the second delivery? Am I risking the nerve damage coming back?

Thanks!
Martha

Answer
Hi Martha

This is very unusual. Did the people looking after you explain how the femoral nerves were damaged? Was it the forceps or an obstetric palsy or did they believe it was somehow related to the epidural. I have problems understanding how an epidural would cause a bilateral palsy but I wouldn't state it was impossible.
I don't think you are risking the nerve damage coming back but as I don't have all the details of what happened I would advise you to go and see your anaesthetist soon to discuss the possibilities well before going into labour.
Kind regards
