Anesthesiology/spinal anesthesia

Question
Dear Dr Jackson,
i need to have an open myomectomy on a large intramural fibroid. However, a chest infection has left me with atelectasis. I am much better but still have some mucus and coughing. Would I be accepted for the operation if I had a spinal anesthesia?
Thank you.
Mary

Answer
Hi Mary
That can only be answered by an anaesthetic colleague when they see you and check you out and discuss your options. However as a guide this op can be done under spinal anaesthesia and this might be a better way forward for your chest.
However once you have recovered from your chest infection then genral anaesthesia will also be an option.
Kind regards
Dr Ian Jackson
