QuestionI would like to state that I had no problems with my epidural when I was in labor. But a year after my child was born I noticed that where my epidural was placed is sore like a bruise when I touch it. I also have pain when I bend forward and to far backwards, like when I pick up my child. What could be causing this pain after all this time?
AnswerHi Karen
I'm glad that the epidural worked well for you during your labour. Now as to your current back problem. I really need to know how long ago you had your epidural. However I'll divide my answer into two groups dealing with if the epidural was fairly recent e.g. last 1-2 months or for soemthing longer than that.
If recent then it is possible that you have some bruising around the ligaments in your back where the needle was inserted. This could be causing you discomfort. I would expect this to settle down within 6-8 weeks of the epidural and should be helped by gentle exercise in the gym or swimming, cycling and even jogging if not pushed to hard. Rubbing in a topical non steroidal anti-inflammatory cream/gel (eg ibuprofen) might also help.
If the epidural was a longer time ago then I would have expected any symptoms due to bruising to have setteled down. However it is worth trying the above programme - done wonders for my back!
The evidence suggets that there is no increased incidence of longterm back problems in mothers who have an epidural compared to those that don't. Backache is common especially when your children are young and you are lifting them all the time - often in awkward positions e.g. leaning over into car seats.
I hope that the above helps and that perhaps my suggestions may help you a bit.
Kind regards
