Anesthesiology/pain during colonscopy

Question
2 days ago I had a colonoscopy. I was given versed and an analgesic by IV.  I remember the pain clearly. It was excruciating.  I could hear myself screaming.  I heard them say ...we are going to have to do it all over again and give her anaesthetic. I have been told to come back in 3 weeks as they could only get 3/4 of the test done and that I would have to have the anaesthetic.  Some one told me they had the anaesthetic and still the pain was excruciating. I know I could not go through that pain again.  Is there nothing that can be done to make sure that you don't have the pain? (please tell me there is) (the thing about prep worse than procedure is a big fat lie!)
I would appreciate your input on my concern.

There are huge differences in the amount of pain or discomfort people feel during colonoscopy. It is also difficult to predict those who are going to experiemce it badly though there is some evidence that those with a history of pelvic surgery e.g. hysterectomy or with a history of diverticulitis have more problems. Quite a number of people can have the investigation with little discomfort and do not need sedation.
Others like yourself are not so lucky and experience severe pain during the procedure. You need to know if it is important for them to complete the investigation and to discuss with them what they are going to do differently. This is vital because if you just carry on as you are you will turn up on the day in such a state that it will be very difficult for them to proceed.
Please chat to them.
