Question
my father was intibated and placed on propofal for 10 days. he has been off the propofal and still on the ventilator but has not regained consiousness. he has rocking head motions and non responsive after 2 days off the propofal. I am concerned about the possibility of no recovery. I have read that propofal does not last that long. what do you think?

Answer
Hi Steve
The duration its sedative effect would last would depend on many factors - the dose he was being given, the reason for his illness, how well his kidneys and liver are working etc.
However after 2 days I would expect the propofol effect to have worn off and so one has to be careful not to build ones hopes up.
I'm sorry but I hope he does make a full recovery.
Kind regards
Dr Ian Jackson
