Anesthesiology/staying awake problem

Question
Hi, Last Monday I had an upper and lower gi procedure. I was given anesthesia for the procedure which lasted about 25 minutes. I felt fine after it was done and went home and did sleep more than usual but I know that is common. Now 1 week later I am having problems staying awake and is affecting me at work. I can't seem to stay awake for more than a few hours and after that just can't keep my eyes open. I have fallen asleep numerous times at my desk, only for a second or 2, but it keeps happening. As soon as I get home from work I go right to bed and right to sleep for about 4-5 hours. I get up for a couple of hours and have to go back to sleep again. Any idea what is causing this? Nothing has changed, still walk 3.5 miles per day, watch my diet, etc. Thanks for any advice you can give me. Mike

Answer
Hi Mike
This is very unusual. The sedatives used for the procedure you had should be well out of your system by now so it is a bit of a mystery. I suggest you continue to exercise as much as you can and wait a few more days to see if this passes. If still a problem after that then I suggest you go see your practitioner to be checked over.
Sorry no magical cure I can offer.
Kind regards
Dr Ian Jackson
