Anesthesiology - nitrous oxide and tranxene together

Expert: Ronald Levy, M.D. - 11/3/2009

Question
If I am having nitrous oxide at the dentist's
would it be all right if I took a tranxene
about an hour before my appointment.  Would
the tranxene and nitrous oxide together
cause a problem?

Answer
Tranxene (Chlorazepate) is a benzodiazepine and as such, has antianxiety properties. There should not be a problem but your dentist should make the final call on that. Make sure to tell him what meds you are on and let him make that decision.
