Anesthesiology/Anestheshia after effects

QuestionMy 6 yr old son had Hernia surgery 2 weeks ago. He had a hard time coming out of the anestheshia. He was really freaked out and screaming and crying. Ever since his surgery he has been very emotional. He cries at everything. he doesn't want to go to school or daycare anymore and he loved being at both places. He pretty much would rather stay home than go anywhere unless I or his dad are with him. Could this be caused from the anestheshia?
AnswerHi Heather
I'm sorry to hear about your sons recent experience. I suspect rather than just 'the anaesthetic' that the whole experience has left him traumatised. However it does sound a bit peculiar as children normally bounce back quite quickly from anything like his. Have you tried to coax out of him what upsets him so much about the episode?
Having a hard time coming out of the anaesthetic could cover a multitude of things and really I would need more to go on. Was he really upset? Was he in a lot of pain? What did the doctors say was the reason for this?
Difficult to know what to suggest apart from being supportive parents - as a parent myself I'd try to get to the bottom of the concerns your lad has.
Sorry I can't be more helpful
Kind regards
Dr Ian Jackson
ps I am sure with loving care and gradual rehabilitation to the things he enjoyed he will get his confidence back.
