Anesthesiology/numbness associated with post surgery for L4-L5 microdiscectomy

QuestionI have persistent numbness around and including my anus following surgery for L4-L5 herniated disc. The surgeon did a central incision and fairly extensive bone sculpting while there. I was catheterized during the surgery and after it was removed I had an unusual sensation in my bladder, very light pressure stream, very hesitant. I have been constipated as well. After taking a laxative I finally had a BM but it was vary wierd because of the numbness of my anus.
What is causing this numbness?
Will it go away on its own?
Thanks,
AnswerThe issue with the foley is common and will go away in several days (you probably had the feeling that you needed to void). As for the numbness, this is likely due to manipulation of the lumbar nerves, etc but really this question is best asked of your surgeon. He will know what he did, what your underlying pathology was and how best to manage it.
