Question
i have breast reduction surgery on June 16th. My problem is i know that i am suppose to stop smoking at least 4 weeks before surgery. i haven't quit completely but have cut back to about 4 a day. As of today I am quitting!!! How will this effect my surgery as far as the anesthesia goes?

Answer
Smoking:

Increases the risk of postoperative and intraoperative respiratory complications, especially coughing.  Coughing increases the risk of post operative hematoma at the surgical site. These problems tend to be exaggerated in the first couple weeks after quitting---so you may want to push back your surgery date.

Increases the risk of postoperative deep vein thrombosis and the formation of venous emboli.
