Anesthesiology/Versed for colonoscopy
Expert: JM Starkman, MD - 7/22/2009
QuestionI had my first colonoscopy on July 14, 2009. I am an extremely healthy, happy, drug-free 62-year-old female. The procedure went smoothly and I had no polyps or problems. I also felt fine afterwards. Two days later I began to have severe panic attacks for no reason. I found myself in 2 emergency rooms; one held me overnight for observation after conducting many tests on my blood and heart. I have a clean bill of health, the heart of a bull. What is happening to me? It has now been one full week since the procedure and I have started taking Ativan and Prozac, and I don't want to take any drugs. The GI doctor says it can't be from the versed because it is short-lived. He also administered demerol and benadryl. I have had both these drugs without a problem, but never versed before. The doctor got very defensive and acted like I was going to sue him. I just wanted to know what he gave me so that I never get it again. Could the versed be causing the panic attacks? Will I ever be well again?
AnswerI blame the Versed---many gastroenterologists-who act as anesthesiologists-during the colonoscopy use versed in much higher doses than is typically administered by those of us who have seen some longer acting effects (in some people) from this drug. Your body will eventually metabolize it.
Longer acting drugs that are "around" like ativan and prozac may be throwing a wrench into the machinery...........get off 'em.
