Anesthesiology/iv question

Question
Hello, I had surgery on 6 oct 2010 to correct a left vaicocele, in which they tied off 3 veins. 2 days after the surgery, I noticed that my hand was swollen on top where they had inserted the IV line. There is no pain, no redness or streaks or bruising. Its just slightly swollen on top of hand and a little on my wrist. The doctor said it looked like infiltration, but gave me keflex just in case it gets red or more swollen. My question is, when elelvating, should I use ice or heat? Should I start antibiotics just in case, and lastly how long does it take for the swelling to subside? Thanks for your time!

Answer
Hi Scott
The likelyhood is that this is a local reaction to the IV canula and the drugs used during your surgery. I wouldn't take the antibiotic unless it gets red and hot - always avoid antibiotics unless they are really needed.
If you keep it elevated on a pillow while you are sitting then it would do no harm to use some ice to cool the area down. Not all the time but for 30 minutes while you are sitting and resting might well help.
It can take a few weeks for the swelling to go.
Kind regards
