Anesthesiology/Brain monitor for MAC

Question
I read portions of a book written by an anesthesiologist who strongly recommends that anyone over 55 receiving MAC sedation should have a brain monitor.  The reason is reportedly to avoid the consequences (e.g., dementia) of being given too much anesthesia.  What is your opinion about this.

Answer
I have never heard of this and it would be incorrect to generalize anesthesia that way. There has been no documented proof that anesthesia contributes to dementia and brain monitoring (or BIS) has not been shown to change morbidity or mortality.
