Anesthesiology/low blood pressure

Question
I recently went to the doctor for an earache and my blood pressure was 87/53.  I typically have lower blood pressure than most but it's not usually quite that low.  I am  35 years old and relatively healthy (I think) I have consistent low energy and weakness at times with some dizziness and fatigue but I always chalk all that up to being a working mom who is exhausted--I get good sleep and eat ok should I worry about this low pressure?  I have some upcoming tests in the GI area and will have to be put to sleep for these...I was already scared of that fact and now focusing on my low blood pressure I am wondering if it is safe for me to be put under anesthesia?

Answer
First of all, have you had your thyroid checked? Often hypothyroid explains many of the symptoms you have. Beyond that, I would get the measurement repeated. It might have been that you didn't eat or drink well the day of the exam and you were hypovolemeic. While 87/53 is low, it would nt necessarily cancel your procedure but it would leave less room for error. I would get a complete physical exam including hormone levels (Thyroid, cortisol, etc) to make sure there is nothing underlying. If everything is normal, you can proceed with your procedure.
