Question
Dr Levy,

I am having a colonoscopy Monday afternoon.  I'm terrified of being sedated with propofol and versed seems to have many side effects, from what I've read.  What mild sedative can I get to keep me alert but not uncomfortable to where I move during the procedure.  I'm extremely panicked over this...HELP!!  Louise

Answer
Both Versed and Propofol are very safe and neither has side effects. Versed has the "intended" effects of causing amnesia and sedation. Propofol has the "intended" effects of causing seadtion (or sleep), amnesia and is an anti-nausea medications. I don't know what you've read but these are the best two drugs to give for a colonoscopy. There is nothing to be panicked over.
