Question
Hi Dr. Jackson, I recently had surgery on my shoulder and I am still having numbness on the left side of my tongue from the breathing tube that was used during the surgery. I saw where you had told another person inquiring that it should usually go away within a few days. Mine is still numb after almost a week. What do you suggest if it is still numb after the two weeks and what can be done to correct the issue? Thanks so much, Jerry

Answer
Hi there
It is quite possible that your numbness is due to the breathing device used for this procedure. If it doesn't settle over the next 4-5 days then I would ask to see your anaesthesiologist to discuss. The reality is that it usually does settle and there is no specific treatment that could help. However it is important to go and see you specialist to ensure there is no other problem leading to this symptom.
Kind regards
Dr Ian Jackson
