Anesthesiology/Panic about my operation

Question
If I could ask you a question or 2, I would appreciate your advice.

I am having a Minimal Invasive, Anterior Hip Resurface on April 8th with Dr. Crofford in Ft. Worth / Texas Hip and Knee.   I am having mini panic attacks as the procedure gets closer.  I need to get this done as I cannot hardly walk anymore.

I am a 44 yr old White male  229 lbs  non smoker, athletic.  I was injured in Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003 and my hip fracture was not correctly diagnosed by the Air Force.

My Family Doctor has perscribed Xanax for me to take as needed.

My question is:

1) Can I take 1 Xanax at midnight prior to my surgery
2) Can / will the Anesthesiologist give me valium the morning of the surgery ?

Can I ask for it?

I am not to scared about the operation, just the 'going under' scares me like no fear I have ever had.  I'd rather be in a gun fight with the taliban than do this !!  UGHHH

Thanks so much !

Answer
When you speak to the anesthesiologist for your preop, ask about the Xanax. Generally it is not a problem but they have final say. As for the morning of surgery, they will likely give you Versed which will have a better effect. I would mention to the anesthesiologist your panic attacks so they can prescribe an anxiolytic preop.
