Question
Dr. Is it possible to go through a surgery such as knee replacment with out the use of ANY amnestic meds whatso ever? If your unconscious, why is amnestic drugs necessary.
Your time is very much appreicated.
Regards,

Answer
Yes. One might opt for a spinal or epidural anesthetic and request NO amnestic drugs.  Amnestic drugs are used during general anesthetics to assure that one 'forgets' in the unlikely event that the anesthetic is insufficient to cause amnesia and result in a patient being inadequately anesthetized and remembering/being aware when that was unintended.
