Anesthesiology/Alternative recipes?

QuestionHi.
I have ME/CFS. I have read that some people develop ME after an operation and general anesthetic. So this has made me conscious of how taxing such a procedure could be if I ever needed such an operation. (I am not aware of needing such an operation at this time.)
I have been told by an ME support group person here in New Zealand that they have an alternative recipe that is recommended for people with ME which is meant to be much easier on the body. A local anethetist has a copy (so I was told) - although he recently retired.
My question is, would most anethetists be open to using such an alternative if it is effective enough? How would you suggest I approached the issue if I was to need such an operation? If there are less potent options then why wouldn't they be used more often as surely they would be a healthier option for everyone?
Thanks.

Beware of what people tell you!
I know of no randomised controlled trials in people with ME who have shown that one type of anaesthetic is better than another. I reassure my patients that I will try and minimise any effect from the anaesthetic on them.
However the major factor is the size of the operation as the 'surgical impact' (i.e. how much actual surgery takes place as in how big the op is) is the real crucial factor on how well and fast you recover after an operation. This has nothing to do with the anaesthetic and is all to do with the way your body deals with the 'wound'.
Most anaesthetists are open to suggestions and it is easy if you are suggesting something that is part of mainstream practice. However if it is more obscure then your only chance is if it is reasonable and backed by good evidence.
In my practice ME sufferers have not had any undue problems but best to avoid surgery if you can!
Hope this helps.
