Question
Late in Dec 06, my neck became very sore, right in the back, dead centre. My MD suggested I go see Physio, upon that, I've been to Massage Theropy, Acupunture and currently Chiro. The pain is allway's there. My X-ray's showed wear and tear, I'm 45 and my Chiro say's my Neck is like a 48 year old. Now, I've also been on Percocets since Jan 07. First, one and currently four a day. It's the only Med able to mask the pain. My Chiro say's I'll be fine soon, 2 day's aweek for the last two month. What's next too do. I feel that the Perc work, but now am being an addict. Where and whatelse can I do...

Answer
Hi there
I reckon that if you are 45 and you have the neck of a 48 year old then that is pretty good! So I'm not impressed with that line. Percocets I've had to look up as we do not have them in the UK. I see they are a mix of acetaminophen (basically paracetamol) and oxycontin. You are right to be concerned about continuing to take these longterm.
Right my advice now - you don't have to take it but I'll be frank.
Stop taking the Percocets but do continue to take acetaminophen by itself regularly to the maximum dose each day. Also add in a non steroidal anti inflammatory drug (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen - unless there is a really good reason for you not to take this. NSAIDs are really good for the type of pain you are experiencing and again you should take the maximum dose each day.
If you have been going to the Chiro for some time i.e. longer than a month then stop. It ain't going to work - if it was it would have helped by now.
Do start getting some regular exercise - swimming, cycling, jogging or at a Gym - and by this I mean at least 3 times per week.
Currently you are a victim of your pain and this can start a downward spiral. You have to lift yourself out of this as I suspect the system you are in is not going to help you.
Don't pay for anymore pseudomedicine such as Chiro - take charge of your life and get rid of the Perc.
There you are - I said you may not like it but having been there with a chronic back problem I know what it is like. The willingness to try anything especially what has worked for others is very strong. Trust me I have never regretted the path I took.
I wish you all the best
