Question
I had an MRI positive for large paracentral disc herniation at L5-S1 and am four months pregnant. How will this affect my epidural status when I am ready to deliver? Might I have to have a c-section for proper anesthesia? My back is already in great pain.  Thank you.

Answer
While an epidural is not strictly contraindicated, most anesthesiologists would likely not do an epidural for you for a c-section. Should you need one, a spinal or general anesthesia would be the preferred choice. If you are planning a vaginal delivery, then you should speak with your anesthesiologist. After understanding the risks and benefits, s/he might be willing to place an epidural for labor pain. You larger concern is how you back will tolerate it as the baby gets larger.
