Anesthesiology/Scaphoid repair under local anaesthetic?

Question
Sir,
Please may you advise me whether it is possible, even remotely, to repair a scaphoid (small bone at base of thumb) fracture surgically without a general anaesthetic?
Thank you
Alan Cobban

Answer
Dear Alan

It is possible but would probably require a local anaesthetic injection to numb your whole arm. This can be done with an injection into your arm pit. Not everyone can do these and the success rate is about 90%.

Hope this helps
