QuestionI am so afraid to have this procedure without sedation. Shouldn't I be able to insist? I have been diagnosed with thrombocytopenia and must have this done on Tuesday.
AnswerHi there Sally
Please express your concerns and anxiety to your doctor when you go for your procedure. You must let them know how anxious you are feeling.
As to sedation and insisting...
This is a difficult area as sedation is not without it's own risks - it is not just a simple case of giving you a tablet and all will be OK. The problem is that people react in different ways to sedatives - some being resistant and others very sensitive. Then there is the issue of when can you be allowed home following a sedative - and that is an issue that causes a lot of discussion!
That is enough about sedation. The important thing is for you to understand what is going to happen and know that you are in good hands. It is important that you have the test as they need to find the cause for your thrombocytopenia. It will be uncomfortable but it should not be painful as they will use local anaesthesia.
I find that I spend a lot of time with my patients encouraging them through issues like this as when it is completed they understand that there was nothing really to worry about AND it helps them deal with future problems they may have to face.
I hope this is of some help, please attend for your test and discuss the issues you have with your doctor.
Kind regards
Dr Ian Jackson
