Question
I'm 23 years old and having a breast augmentation in the beginning of March.  As far as I know I'm extrememly healthy but I'm really worried about going under general anesthesia.  I've actually been under anesthesia for my wisdom teeth being pulled I believe, but am not exactly sure.  Can you tell me how dangerous it is with regards to coma or even death?

Answer
Hi Nicole
Modern anaesthesia is extremely safe. You should have a look at the information held at http://www.youranaesthetic.info/
Risk of coma and death are dealt with in the leaflet found at http://www.rcoa.ac.uk/docs/death%20or%20brain%20damage.pdf
There are always hazards in life - crossing the road, cycling and horse riding are examples of where risk gradually increases with each activity.
Anaesthesia compares well with these and though no one can give you a cast iron guarantee that you will not have any problems - we can say it is very unlikely. It is calculated that for each million anaesthetics in the UK there are 4-5 deaths.
I have to believe that my patients will be fine each day otherwise I could not (and would not) do my job.
I hope this helps
