Question
I have waited four years for ankle stabilization operation and previously had to turn down an operation slot due to having to fly the next week.
I have just been offered a cancellation and again I will be flying to USA in five weeks.
In your opinion when is the latest date you would advise flying after a general anesthetic and if this is within this time ie five weeks would you recommend an alternative anesthetic method that I could discuss with the surgeon.
Your advise is greatly appreciated

Answer
Hi there
Sorry but the limitations really have very little to do with the anaesthesia. The major issue surrounds the increased possibility of you suffering a blood clot in your legs (DVT) after surgery. This is already a problem for all air travellers for a variety of reasons. I would seek advice from your surgeon.
On a further note it also would depend on the type of procedure being performed and your age. I have arelative who we looked after for over 6 weeks while they were non weight bearing on their ankle following a similar procedure.
I hope this helps
