Anesthesiology/pain from the Anesthesia

Question
I had a hysteroscopy and a poloypectomy as well as a D&C done yesterday. As the Dr. put the mask on my face to put me to sleep, I had a shooting and horrific pain in the side of my neck and since waking have had terrible pain all over my chest,, back and neck. Is this a symptom of the anesthesia? I don't even feel where I had the surgery but the muscles in my body and chest are screaming in pain. is this normal?
Thank you so much.

Answer
Hi Jo Marie
This is not a normal reaction to anaesthesia.
Possibilities are that the anaesthetist gave you a drug called suxamethonium which paralyses you. This causes your muscles to contract as it works and leaves a feeling of severe muscle aches and pain across your body for a few days afterwards.
It is not usual to use this drug for the op you describe - but if they were worried due to a history of reflux or if you are 'quite large' then it is possible.
I can't really think of another explanation that would cause you pain at the start and continued pain the next day.
I am really sorry you have had this experience I suggest you take regular ibuprofen (if you are not allergic to it) for a few days as this may help a bit.
Kind regards
Dr Ian Jackson
