Anglicans/ousting elected vestry members
Expert: John White - 10/21/2011
QuestionHow can elected vestry members be ousted within canon law. In this case, the congregation wishes to remove two members for their lack of respect to the Priest and concerted efforts to have him retire when he does not yet wish to do so. The congregation supports the Priest as their spiritual leader.
This conflict may well close the church.
AnswerI am a member of The Episcopal Church, USA. I am not familiar with the Anglican Church in Mexico, if that is the part of the Communion to which you belong. If it helps, I would refer you to the 2009 Constitutions and Canons of The Episcopal Church, at
http://www.episcopalarchives.org/pdf/CnC/CandC_2009pp11-60.pdf. Title I, Canon 14 is all that it says about vestries, and it does not touch on your question. Each diocese of The Episcopal Church has its own canons and constitution. It is there that you would have to look for regulations regarding removal of vestry members. Sorry that I could not answer your very specific question, but it appears that it would be a matter covered by your local jurisdictional canons.
