QUESTION: My 17 year old son moved out of my house 5 days ago and came back 2 days later with the police.  The police handcuffed me and would not release me until I agreed to give my son the dog, which they deny now.  I am the owner of the dog.  I have the reciept where I purchased him and the cancelled checks and the vet records.  What do I do?

ANSWER: Hi Julie,

First, let me say this is not my expertise, this seems more like a human issue, however, in my personal opinion, I suppose what you do would depend on which is more important, your relationship with your son, or the relationship with your dog, in how you handle this.

I would assume in whatever state you are, an attorney would help return the dog to you.  There are also groups (ASPCA) and Humane Society in your state that would probably give great advice.

QUESTION: My son will be 18 in 2 weeks and he has made it known that he does not want to come back home and live wtih me.  He is living with his father that gave up his parental rights 3 years ago.  I would give anything for my son to come home and I have seeked legal advice on this issue.  I just want to know if I can prove I am the owner of the dog what are my chances of getting him back?  Thank you.

The only advice I can give regarding this matter is to seek legal counsel.  I do not see any reason why you couldn't get the dog back if you have receipts, etc., however I do not know the entire circumstances nor do I know the laws in your state.
