AboutRobin Flynn Expertise I can answer general questions about many animal rights topics, to include animals in entertainment, factory farming, vivesection & research, animals used for clothing, veganism, etc.
Experience I am a true animal lover. I started on my vegetarian path at the age of 12 and am now vegan today. I believe we have abused our powers over animals and it is time we make some ethical changes. I choose to fight for animals becasue it is easier than just sitting around and watching the abuse continue to happen. I am a volunteer member of several organizations to include; PETA, PCRM, Sea Shepherd, Farm Sanctuary HSUS, MARC, BADL and Grey2K
Question I am so distraught and stressed over my situation, I have been surfing the Internet for hours upon hours and I just can't get any help. My problem is that I have been feeding these feral cats for years behind this big business in the parking lot far back they have little shrubs and trees and I go put the food and water under them, and the next day go clean it up and put fresh food and water. And then all of sudden the security guards said I could not feed the cats anymore, after doing it so long. I know this is private property but please what can I do, have I no recourse. Thank You for any advice
Answer Linda,
I'm not sure when you emailed this question as it is posted in the "animal rights" question pool. I have experience with this issue and that is why I elected to answer it. My Mom, an avid animal lover was also feeding some feral cats in her yard at a large condominium complex. None of the cats were neutered/spayed and the condominium association had an issue with this. My mom ignored their demands that she stop feeding these cats. I was unaware of the situation but I was called when she received a notice to appear in court. Legally the association was right. We hired an attorney but my mom was ordered to stop feeding the cats. Sadly, the association called animal control and I'm sure the cats were put down. Now if my mother had called me I would have suggested that she call any local no-kill shelter and ask them if they trap wild cats or if they know of someone who can help. Many of these organizations simply relocate the feral cats to an area where they are safe AND they neuter the cats before releasing them. Many of these feral communities also have feeding programs. And by that I mean a group of volunteers who share the responsibly of feeding the cats. It is important to continue to feed cats that have become accustomed to finding food given by humans. Now the business may agree to allow the cats to stay on their property ( depending on the number) as long as they have been neutered. They may not let you feed them. But you never know if you approach them with a plan they may actually be nice people. I would find the "animal friendly" humane trappers and put together a plan to trap/neuter and release the cats and possibly present this to the property management. If they disagree to continue to let you feed them then ask the shelter if there is safer place to release where you can continue to feed them.
Please contact the organizations below they may also be able to help.
