Question I'd be very thankful if you could answer a few questions, it is for a school research paper.
1) What are the risks associated with eating animal products?
2) What are the benefits of eating a plant based diet?
3) How long does it take to see positive results from switching from a diet including meat and animal products to one excluding them?
4) Are there any negative results from switching to a vegetarian/vegan diet?
5) Is vegetarianism/veganism safe for infants and young children?
Answer Hello Lea,
Happily - I can answer these questions!
1. Risks are heart disease, cancer, diabetes, osteoporosis, obesity, and many other diseases.
2. Benefits of a plant based diet are enormous - and too many to mention, but I'll touch on some of the basics - staying lean, avoiding cholesterol, saturated fats, hormones, antibiotics. Also, gaining all essential amino acids in their purest form (Plants) - calcium, protein, and all the others - with the exception of B-12, which can be consumed in yeast, and fortified soymilk or nut milks.
3. PCRM (Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine) have done tests and studies on human health and the reversal of most diseases - and they suggest 30 days is all it takes to notice a difference in health. Of course the results vary depending on individuals and what they eat (you can be vegan and still eat junk food)....
4. The only negative results is not eating enough of a varied diet to get all of the nutrients your body needs, which is the same in carnivores. Eating a variety daily, getting plenty of sunshine for vitamin D and making sure you eat a lot of leafy green veggies is very important. Spinach is a great source of protein, as is beans, legumes, nuts - as well as calcium. If you don't drink a fortified soy or nut milk, take a B-12 supplement, and your health will blossom.
5. Absolutely safe for all human beings. Infants are more succeptable to the hormones and antibiotics and bad chemicals found in milk and dairy, so they benefit even more than older people.
Hope that answers your questions.
Thanks and good luck in your paper!
