Animal Rights/Relocating a small red squirrel

Question
Hi Stephen:  For 4 years, I've had a red sqirrel (chippy) living in my back shed (wood - he's chewed entries & exits). He has 100's of pine cones, walnuts & a nest-a mess, to be sure, but I enjoy watching him. We have a rat problem in neighborhood. Evidence they've been in shed.  I have to put down rat baits and am afraid Chippy may eat it.  I purchased a live trap cage & am thinking of relocating him.  Would he survive (we have lots of snow right now) or should I take chance I leave him where he is in hopes that he doesn't eat it.  Don't know if it's legal in Michigan or not (to relocate him) but I'll take my chances.  My friends, family think I'm nuts to be worrying about him but I have a real compassion for animals.  Please answer ASAP.  Thanks.  The "squirrel" (or squirrly) lady.  (Possible duplicate message)

Answer
Is translocation even legal in your state? You should find out first. It is illegal in Massachusetts and Nebraska to list two states. Even if it is legal, it is not advisable for a host of reasons. One as you may know is that moving the squirrel means his cache doesn't move with him.

See http://www.icwdm.org/ControlMethods/default.asp and click on relocation to see why it is rarely a good idea.

My next question is why are you having a problem with rats? You should read our literature on rats to see if there are non-toxic ways to control them in your area.
