Animal Rights/Materials

Question
I recently bought a pair of shoes under the impression they were made of synthetics, because it stated for each; upper, sole, sock and lining were made of 'OTHER', as apposed to leather, coated leather, or textiles.  I have since thought 'But they look like leather' and 'what materials are classed in the category 'OTHER''. Can you please tell me what they mean by 'OTHER' and if this definately means they are cruelty free - although they look like leather.
Thanks

Answer
Hi Dani,
I have done some research on the definition of  “other” material and I can find the actually definition but it seems to come up a lot on UK shoes. Most non leather shoes that I encounter are labeled “all man made materials”. I have never seen “other” before and I’m a little shoe crazy so I’m a bit surprised. I wish I had a better answer for you. In cases like this I would simply email the company and ask them exactly what “other” is or ask the store manager where you bought them. He/She should know what they are selling in their store. If I were to make a guess I would say the shoes are not animal skin but I’m anal about these things so I would inquire.   I have several shoes that look exactly like leather and I get the “oh you don’t eat meat but you wear leather” statement all the time.  It is amazing what designers can do today without harming animals. Why everyone isn’t as thoughtful as you still drives me crazy. If you like shoes like I do, I have included a few of my favorite links. Buying from vegan stores should guarantee that your shoes are not animal skins and you will be supporting great companies. Also, the majority of Payless shoes are man made and DWS has a lot of shoes to choose from as well. Thanks for caring about the animals and for not wearing their skin on your feet.   And keep checking those labels.

Expertise

I can answer general questions about many animal rights topics, to include animals in entertainment, factory farming, vivisection & research, animals used for clothing, veganism, etc.

Experience

I am a true animal lover. I started on my vegetarian path at the age of 12 and am vegan today. I believe we have abused our powers over animals and it is time we make some ethical changes. I choose to fight for animals because it is easier than just sitting around and watching the abuse continue to happen.

Organizations
I am a volunteer member of several organizations to include; PETA, PCRM, Sea Shepherd, Farm Sanctuary, HSUS, MARC, and Grey2K. The closest organization to my heart is The Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary. This place is truly amazing and its run by some really cool compassionate people.
