Question
Hi I live in the country and there is a stray/feral Golden retriever type dog that has three new puppies,I put out some food for her,she will take it,but won't let me catch her

What is the best way of gaining her trust? It's getting cold out and I don't want her or the puppies to freeze to death,I plan on keeping her and getting her fixed ect The local no kill rescue has agreed to find homes for the puppies if I can get a hold of the mother

Answer
Hi Chloe,

you can try setting the food out closer and closer to your house, getting her to come closer and to see nothing bad is going to happen to her.

The other thing you can try (too bad it's cold now) but I would sit out there as far away as you can without making her leave, and jsut sit there.  You could try to ignore her and see if that makes her curious, or you could try to talk to her and get her to come over to you.  The trick is not to go for her, let her come to you.  If she does come over you can pet her and then put a leash on her collar (if she has one.

Expertise

I can answer questions regarding animals rights from a biblical Christian worldview. If you were to try to place me in a category, you'd probably place me in the 'animal welfare' category rather than say, the 'animal rights' or the more extreme animal activist categories like PETA, ALF, etc. Please know that I am not here to get into debates with anyone, or deal with people wanting an argument. If you want to try to argue with me I am wrong on certain things, don't bother even sending a question. This is not the reason why I am volunteering here. Also, please realize that I am not a bona-fide quotable source for anyone's research papers or projects. I have my beliefs and opinions and have done personal research, but nothing professionally that would make me a good source for such things. I will reject any such requests.

Experience

I am a pet owner of several house rabbits. I have done extensive reading and research on the topics of animals in the bible, how they are treated, and biblical stewardship of mankind on the earth.
