Question
QUESTION: I know that 3dmax is used for 3d animation but what stuff is used for 3d animation like spongebob like cartoons?  Softimage?

ANSWER: Hello Mike,

I'm a bit confused by your question.
Are you asking about 2D animation? Spongebob is hand drawn 2D except for the live action and cut-out segments.

QUESTION: 3d was a typo...   other have suggested http://www.toonboom.com, or http://www.digicel.net/flipbook.htm  as applications for that kind of thing...

what do you think?

Answer
Hi Mike,

Both of those software packages are good to do animation. You just have to figure out which one is right for you. Most software has demo downloads so you can try out and see which suits your needs.

Flash is also good. Sometimes you may use one software for one type of style of animation and another for some other style.

Just as you would use different pencils or paints to do artwork, different software are tools that can be interchanged or sometimes mixed together. such as for 2D and 3D combinations; Cut outs with cel animation; Live and animation combined.

Hope this helps,
