Question
How can I save as a still image, or photo in After Effects?

Answer
Hey Jim,

There are a couple ways to do it.

1) In the pull down menu, Go to Composition > Save Frame As
2) Add the timeline to the render que as you would a normal video sequence (Composition > Add to Render Que), but change the export settings to a .jpg sequence (or .tif or other image file format), and set the workspace time (the area that it renders) to only include one frame of time.

I hope this is what you were asking.  If not let me know, and I will be more than happy to revisit your problem.

Cheers,
Andre'
