Question
My 15 year old daughter was sitting with a grooup of her peers and made a comment that there was a difference between cartoon and animation which the group laughed at her and told her there was no difference. I would like to know if you would say there was or wasn't and could I have an explanation of how either way.
Thank you

Answer
They are both right.

A cartoon, like a Bugs Bunny film cartoon is animation.
A newspaper strip or "comics" in a book are also cartoons, but are not animation.
Cartoons are turned into animation all the time. Cartoons are not animation until its moving.

Here are a couple of origins and definitions that I found:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cartoon

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Animation

Hope this helps.
