Animation/Some level-headed advice please Joseph!

QuestionHi Joseph,
I just wanted some level-headed advice. I am searching the internet for 3D apps that will integrate with my After Effects and Photoshop applications. I have come across Cinema 4D, which I am really getting to like more and more. The question is this. I still feel that I am missing out on the '3D Experience' because I am not learning the "Industry's weapon of choice", Maya. I ask at the forums and I get such vehement opinion on this matter that it frankly confuses me.
As someone who is in the profession, what is you advice on this matter?
I know it is the creative mind that creates the idea and not the application, but Maya looms as such a swiss army knife of creativity that I cannot seem to avoid its presence!
Best wishes,
Sergio
Answerhey sergio, the question you pose is a common dilemna for artists deciding which 3d program to master. over the years, ive seen a whole bunch of 3d programs come and go, so i understand why you would want to make an informed decision before focusing on any particular program.
i suggest you examine what aspect of the industry you intend to focus on, and pick the program that is most used in that part of the industry. for example, if you are simply creating 3d animation to supplement your motion graphics, then cinema 4d might suffice. but if you want to get more heavily involved in 3d for films and high-end commercials, perhaps maya will be your program of choice. find out which programs are used at the company or companies that you intend to work. employers will often select an artist not simply on the merit of their work, but based on which programs they use.
at the end of the day, no matter which program you use, i believe there will be a lot of crossover of concepts, so you will not be totally starting from scratch if you learn cinema 4d and then decide to port over to maya down the road. i too have heard that maya is the more robust, solid program, and all things equal, i would probably pick up maya if i had to. on the other hand i have heard that a lot of after effects artists find it a lot easier to 'get into' cinema 4d.
good luck in your decision and please let me know if you have any questions.
