Question
While this is somewhat "going out on a limb" for me, for years I've wanted to hear from an established pro in the field regarding my very unconventional, unpro "work".  Being a musician, not knowing anything about motion graphics (still don't), I fell  into this technique of creating visuals by experimenting with multi-layered video feedback compositions.Spent some 7-8 years refining this technique while gaining some attention at music festivals, clubs, etc.
Tiring of the thankless club/rave gigs I ceased these pursuits a few years back until recently putting some of my "stuff" online. In the process, I was reminded why I became so fascinated from the start...the effortless way music (always added latter) finds the sweet spot. The first clip in the link below illustrates this pretty clearly, new song, old video, no cuts. (please excuse the few elements that might not have complete c/r clearance...they will be deleted soon and seen by few.

Again, don't take this too seriously, I have a very good "real job" but couldn't resist the temptation that this great resource in "Ask an Expert" affords us...No real specific ?'s, just an overview of your professional impression realizing this particular area is outside your(or anyones) specific (educated) expertise/real-world experience. Beyond being the perfect back-drop for a 60's Hendrix concert...is there a place for such imagery in this day and age?

Answer
Hey Eddie,

Thanks for sharing.

Motion graphics are often used to enhance live events, whether for music concerts or dull company gatherings. So, yes, I think there is a role for these type of visuals - hard for me to say whether your style in particular would gain any traction.

Personally, what I found the most interesting about your spot was that the fish - after a while - sometimes almost seemed like they were lip-syncing to the lyrics. Struck me as kind of funny, not sure if that was your intent. I actually would like to see a version without any EFX, just the fish cut to the lyrics so that they look like they're rapping. Could be cute and very funny.

I find the EFX that you laid on top of the video to be a bit too complex and distracting. Perhaps you did this to hide the fact that you were using footage from 'Nemo'? I would suggest shooting some of your own footage and experimenting with that, not just for legal reasons, but you might find that once you are using your own material, you will feel more comfortable applying less EFX.

Hope my two cents helps!
