Animation/Computer Or Software Specific?

Question
Hi. My dad was curious as to whether computer animators (he referenced Pixar animators in particular) needed very special computer. I think they must just use updated software. Is this right?

Answer
Hi Sonja,

Pixar uses top of the line Apple computers since Steve jobs was CEO of Pixar until its acquisition by Disney. They have some propritary software that runs on these computers. Some studios use Mayaź and other software programs for CGI.

Many OS platforms and software programs are used for animation. Many times studios and artists alike will use a variety of these different setups for what each platform and software solution works best for the project being done.

Hope this helps.
