Question
Hello Russell,
 I'm new to animation.
Can I have your thought about What ability should a excellent designer have? And Which one is important to you?

Answer
Hi Sui,

For working professionally, I would say versatilty with styles and techniques is a good jumping off point. If you only have a personal style you are limited by what you can do.

If you are being asked to create something for a client they usually ask for "something like..." (fill in famous illustrator/animator/designer here).

Do you have an online portfolio I can look at? If you would like to see some of my work go here...

You will see a lot of styles. Some are of other designers some are my own design and some are "like someone elses'"

I hope this helps,

Russell
